The Solution

As hazing continues to occur throughout Greek life, certain enforcement methods have proven themselves ineffective. Read this article and discover United Against Hazing's presented solution.

Despite the feeling that there is no solution to prevent hazing from happening in the first place, there can be ways to shift the culture and prevent these events from hazing.

During the pledging process, it is emphasized that the pledges are less than the members and that the members can haze because of the power they hold over new members. By decreasing this power differential, changes may be seen in Greek life regarding hazing.

Below are some of the methods that can be used, according to the University of Rochester. It is emphasized that the power differential can be decreased through the promotion of activities that allow incoming members to meet current members and become personally accustomed to them. This can be done through mini games, contests, social get togethers, and other forms of events.

An article by Time Magazine mentions that an important step in preventing hazing is changing the culture around pledging, rather than emphasizing only strict enforcement and certain policies. Rather than emphasizing to older members that seniority gives them certain privileges, older members should create interpersonal relationships with new members. This will also allow continuing members to shape those who plan on joining the fraternity.

This can help incoming members get accustomed to leadership roles and will allow them to pass on the tradition of treating pledges in a way that does not demean them or take advantage of their position within the fraternity. Something as simple as a sports tournament can help brothers within the fraternity create bonds with incoming members.

By holding these events, instances of hazing can be lessened because of the member’s relationships with newer members. Since the power differential has been reduced from the beginning, continuing members will be accustomed to the pledges and will not be as inclined to heavily haze.

By creating a personal relationship between new and continuing members, the incentive to haze will be lessened, as the newer members are no longer “just a pledge” to other members.
